Just in time for Valentine’s Day. The Funky Hearts Quilt is now available for purchase in my Etsy shop. I actually designed this in 2024 but didn’t get it written in time for Valentine’s Day. Well, this year, it’s happening.
The Funky Hearts Quilt is made up of strip piecing. You may know how much I like to work with strips of fabric – and that’s evident in some of my other quilt patterns.
I fell in love with this fabric that I found at Joann’s. I wasn’t sure if these colors were too bright, but once I decided on this lime green/red combo, I was committed.
This quilt is mostly all strip piecing. To make things easier, I used my Stripology Ruler. If you don’t have one of these, I’d highly recommend it. The ruler has slits for your desired size of strip. All the strips in this quilt are 1 1/2″ wide, so making accurate cuts is critical. Seriously, this is soooo fast.
Once you get all your strips cut, you’re ready to sew.
One thing to remember when sewing multiple, long strips together, is to sew one strip from the top, turn your piece around and sew the next strip from the bottom. This helps the strip set stay straight and keeps it from curving in the middle.
Now, I am and have always been someone who presses to the dark side. I’ll do whatever I can to NOT press open. But, for these strip sets, it’s better to press open. It will be easier to match your seams once you cut the strip set apart and sew blocks back together. Trust me.
For those of you who like to keep your trimmings. When you sew the snowball corners and trim them down, you’ll end up with extra cuts that you can sew together to form half square triangles. You may want to keep these to make another project in the future — or you can make blocks to add to your quilt backing.
For the quilting, I did a semi-custom design. Straight line quilting, stippling, ribbon candy, and a zigzag on the inner borders.
I also made a baby quilt in red. Part of me wishes I’d made this one in a throw size, because I love the colors.
On the red version I free motion quilted an all over heart. I’ll be adding a free tutorial to my Youtube on the heart design soon.
I’d love to see what you make. Share your photos and tag me on Instagram @marygoroundquilts
