Where do you live: Sherman, MS (outside of Tupelo)
How long have you been quilting? Off and on for about 5 years where I have been consistently working a project. I started fiddling with art quilts back in 2006.
How did you get started quilting? I have been a sewist of color since I was a child. My mother and grandmother sewed clothes and quilts so I picked up sewing. My mother didn’t want me to “break” her machine so I was relegated to sewing on one of those old Singer machines. Later, they bought me a “toy” sewing machine which did everything but buttonholes. I loved the feeling of accomplishment from watching something go from a pattern to a finished garment. I stopped sewing in the 90’s because the fabric that I liked was no longer available in Jackson, Mississippi because the fabric stores closed. I longed to utilize my artistic side but I didn’t want to paint anymore. I started watching Love of Quilting in the 2000s and subscribed to Quilting Arts. It was the perfect marriage of sewing and art! So much of what was shown in Quilting Arts was advanced so attempting to replicate what I saw was frustrating for me. I needed something like Quilting Arts 101! lol I have a double major in art and math so quilting allows me to use my artistic side. I enjoy utilizing statistics with the art so that it spurs someone to think about what has been captured.
What is your favorite part of quilting? I really have two parts: fabric selection and getting the idea! I love just feeling the fabric because I am very tactile. It took me a long time to realize that I loved feeling fabric and that was why I was so drawn to fabric and clothing.
What is your least favorite part of quilting? What most people don’t like to do: the doggone binding! I am learning how to do this and I need to pick just one method of doing so. It still is the bane of my quilting existence.
Do you have a day job? If so, what do you do? I am a retired math educator who does a lot of coaching both professionally and privately.
Do you design your own quilt patterns? Sometimes I do design my own quilts and it really depends upon what I feel Spirit wants to be said. My last quilt consisted of 9 blocks with each depicting a phenomenon that affects African Americans. I like getting into “good trouble”.
If you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Any type of vegetable dish will work for me! I can’t narrow it down to one dish because I love vegetables.
What three words best describe you? I’m fair, honest and a hard worker.
Which do you prefer: fat quarters or yardage? I love yardage!
Favorite season? Fall
