Valentine's day quilted table runner.
Tutorials

Look at this cute heart table runner. I was debating what heart project I should make for Valentine’s Day. Did I want a tote, a pillow, a mini quilt? This runner sort of just came together as I was making the heart blocks. I had no real plan ahead of time. I made a bunch of hearts, then I decided when I was done what I would actually make.

I will start by giving you the instructions to make one heart block. You will need 10 blocks to complete this project. I used an assortment of fabrics from my stash. Good scrap buster project. You don’t need much. Finished size is approximately 11 1/2″ x 28″

What you’ll need
Color fabrics: (10) 5″ x 5″ squares

Background: (20) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares
(40) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
(8) 1 1/2″ x 4 1’2″ sashing strips (between blocks)
(3) 1 1/2″ x 28″ strips (sides and middle)
(2) 1 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ strips (top and bottom)

Let’s get started.

  1. Cut your 5″ x 5″ square in half, so you have two rectangles that measure 2 1/2″ x 5″.
  2. Draw a diagonal line on the back of each background square.

3. Divide your rectangles into two equal stacks. Place a 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square on the bottom of each rectangle. Right sides together. Make sure your diagonal lines are in this direction.

4. Stitch on the drawn line,Cut 1/4″ from the drawn line.

5. Open and press toward the background fabric. This completes the bottom of the heart.

6. For the tops of the heart, place a 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ square in the upper right corner, right sides together. Stitch on the drawn line.

7. Trim 1/4″ from the drawn line. Open and press toward the background fabric.

8. Now place a 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ square on the top left of the rectangle, right sides together. Stitch on the drawn line.

9. Trim 1/4″ from the drawn line. Open and press toward the background fabric.

10. Place your heart pieces, right sides together. Match your seams so your points will meet and sew with a 1/4″ seam..

11. Your heart block is complete.

**You will need 10 heart blocks for this project.

12. Arrange your heart blocks in your desired order. Hearts rows point in opposite directions. Place a 4 1/2 x 1 1/2″ sashing strip in between each block. Sew your blocks/sashing stirps together to form two rows.

13. Place a long 1 1/2″ x 28″ sashing stip in the middle of the two rows. And one on each outside edge. Sew together. Press toward background.

14. Sew the 1 1/2 x 11 1/2″ sashing strips to the top and bottom to complete your table runner.

You’re done. Baste and quilt in your desired method!
